ALBUM: “Jump In” (no label listed)
Now based here in upstate, singer-songwriter Dana LaCroix is originally from Toronto, Canada, and she spent some years in New York City, developed her craft, became an internationally touring artist, and even got two songs in a movie called “Fear X” starring John Turturro.
She’s put out several albums, and gets better with each one.
With “Jump In”, she digs deeper, singing about growth and her reflections on life, as she candidly reveals her hopes and her fears.
There’s some real grit in “Northern Summer Nights” as LaCroix recalls another Canadian singer, Amanda Marshall, as she sings of that perfect endless summer, young and wild, and even quotes Neil Young (“hey my my, rock ‘n’ roll will never die”) and wonders if those days are gone for good.
A meaty acoustic guitar drives “City Boy,” yet another coming of age, self-realization ode- a city girl looking for something more, and the space for it, as she yearns to “feel the dirt under my feet.”
LaCroix’ voice is certainly something special, spectacular even. She sings each word with meaning and tells a story.
The deadly slow-groove of the down-and-dirty title track, “Jump In,” provides LaCroix with a solid foundation for her sultry delivery, while the sassy “Take A Swing At the Moon” has Beatle-esque overtones.
The singing, songwriting, playing and production here are all at the highest level. Well done.
