Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, singer/songwriter Dana LaCroix has called many cities home and these days it is Binghamton, NY. A resident for the past three years, she has never performed a concert in her adopted city. That will change on Saturday, March 12th, at 7pm, when she will appear at a fundraiser for VINES at the United Presbyterian Church on Chenango Street. The performance is the first in a string of gigs that will take her from Binghamton and Oneonta to NYC, Washington DC and on to Denmark where she will play 14 dates with blues artist, Murali Coryell.
With a solid background in roots and folk music and a youth spent listening to the great pop and R&B artists of the 70’s and 80’s, LaCroix’s music has drawn comparisons to Bonnie Raitt, Eva Cassidy and Maria Muldaur. The charm, power and intimacy of her music has attracted such admirers as Denny Doherty of the Mamas and the Papas, and Legendary songwriter, Gordon Lightfoot, who called her recent release, “a passionate album by a wonderful songwriter”.
“I grew up with an awareness of the natural connection between music and social issues and I’ve always thought of singing as something that brings people together”, said LaCroix. “I learned that early on from my dad who sang and toured in a folk group during the civil rights era.”
Sought after for her songs, as well as for her live appearances, LaCroix has written music for other recording artists, including Dutch pop singer, Hind, as well as delivered songs to John Tururro’s mystery thriller film “Fear X”.
At the Binghamton concert LaCroix will be accompanied by Dave Restivo, 3-time winner of the Canadian National Pianist of the Year Award. Restivo, who has performed with Rob McConnell’s Boss Brass and legendary songwriter Marc Jordan, is listed in the current edition of Canadian Who’s Who. The repertoire will be a mix of LaCroix’s own material as well as interpretations of some of her favorite artists including Randy Newman and Mose Allison.
The concert will take place at the United Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 12th at 7:00pm. Light snacks and beverages will be provided from 7-7:30pm. Music begins at 7:30pm. Tickets: $12 with advance registration, or $18 at the door. Bring event postcard to the door and receive advance ticket prices.
